At the recent China International Cultural and Creative Industries Expo, an "intangible cultural heritage gearbox" incorporating Suzhou embroidery techniques became a focal point. Created in collaboration between the Suzhou Institute of Arts and Crafts and a car modification brand, the piece incorporates traditional embroidery techniques into the leather covering of the gearbox, creating exquisite designs depicting Jiangnan water towns, flowers, birds, insects, and fish.
Each piece takes over 40 hours to create, handcrafted by an intangible cultural heritage inheritor. Limited to 99 pieces, each sold for a hefty 3,800 yuan (approximately $1,000), they were quickly snapped up by collectors. Organizers stated, "This is a prime example of the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern industrial design, bringing traditional culture into everyday life."
Industry experts cite this crossover innovation as not only enhancing the cultural value of auto parts but also finding new applications for intangible cultural heritage techniques, driving the "national trend" into high-end manufacturing.
